Birmingham’s oldest inn dates back to 1368, and the lovingly mantained rooms, tastefully decorated and still held up by the original beams and plaster, have kept much of their traditional character. In 1575, Queen Elizabeth I spent a night here in Room Seven; her seal remains engraved on the wall to mark her presence. A Tudor historian called the place “a fair mansion of tymber” in 1538, and as a friendly, family-run, and comfortable place to spend the night, it remains quite the fair deal for the budget traveler. The charming pub and restaurant downstairs serves food daily until 10pm. The fresh full English breakfast is homecooked by the chef.
